The Overture, despite its title, has no folkloristic or programmatic overtones. It was written at the request of conductor Alan Carter, and commemorates two brief periods spent by the composer at the Middlebury College Composers' Conference under Mr. Carter's direction.
Written in Los Angeles and Balboa Island, California, between 13 December 1947 and 26 January 1948; extensively revised during December 1953.
